Rappahannock County experienced its third' traffic fatality of the year Sunday morning when a pedestrian was killed on Route 211 just west of Washington. The victim was Gene Bennett Tibbs, 29, a colored male of Marshall, Va. The accident occurred about 3:15 a.m.
Investigation disclosed that Tibbs had been to a dance at Flatwood Inn and was seen leaving walking. He had been seen walking near where he was struck and another passing motorist had reported a man lying in the road to Trooper J. B. Willis, Sheriff C. K. Estes and Deputy Netus Brown who were patroling in the area. When the officers arrived at the scene in a matter of minutes, Tibbs had been struck by a vehicle which failed to stop, but was later identified as a 1965 Plymouth owned by Curtis Waldo Cliffin of Washington, Va. Tibbs was taken to Culpeper Memorial Hospital by Rappahannock Rescue Squad and then transferred to the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, but died enroute. Investigation continues. Jonny T. Grimsley of Monterey, Tenn. escaped serious injury when a tractor-trailer he was operating went out of control near Sperryville Tuesday afternoon. Grimsley was descending the mountain when his brakes apparently failed in Shenandoah National Park about four miles west of the village. According to Trooper R. M.
