Dodson, the heavy rig, a 65 International tractor leased to Bowman Transportation of Gadston, Ala., was pulling a trailer loaded with more than eighteen tons of sheet copper in rolls. When the brakes failed to hold, the driver hugged the left bank of the mountain in an effort to stop. The tractor struck a projecting rock, veered across the highway and plunged over the right bank.
Grimsley was taken to Page Memorial Hospital in Luray by Flint Hill Rescue Squad with a leg injury. According to Mr. Dodson Wednesday morning, his condition was not serious and he is expected to be released that afternoon.
A GMC van loaded with mattresses turned over Thursday on Route 211 three miles west of Washington. Willie Albert Edmonds of Roanoke, operator of the truck which was owned by the Norfolk Mattress Company of Roanoke, escaped injury. According to Trooper W. A. Buntin, Edmonds topped a hill and ran up behind a station wagon making a left turn into Washington Fruit Growers. He applied his brakes, skidded across the highway and overturned on its side. Edmonds was charged with following too closely. Damage to the truck was estimated at $1,000. Two vehicles were involved in a minor crash north of Flint Hill on Route 522 Friday.
