Southern forests produced 37,075,355 cords of pulpwood in 190 8 shattering the 1907 production record by 10 percent.

cords of roundwood afid residues for a 1 percent increase over 1907 production figures The production of roundwood. however, decreased by 9 percent in Virginia while the use of residues increased by a large 40 percent making a 1 percent over all production increase for the state Rappahannock County produced 2,345 standard cords of roundwood in 1908 consisting of 2,329 cords of pine and 25 cords of hardwood.

Forester Vemam states that the increase by 40 percent in the use of wood residues in Virginia is a most favorable trend as it means that the mills are practicing better ‘.’utilization of their raw material which means that less wood is being left in the woods. Tight utilization and an increasing demand for forest products means a better market price for the timber grower. Pine still appears to be the main species of tree used in pulpwood production in Virginia and the figures show little change in the steady demand for pine pulpwood.

The report also shows that 7 new mills started production in 6 southern states and that all but two southern states increased their pulping capacity. The new mills, plus the expanded existing mills, boosted southern pulping capacity to 77,140 tons per day. ‘HiUs the South continues its pulp and paper expansion and the outlook for pulpwood production in the South and Virginia looks most favorable.
