Dependency Rates
On October 27,1969, President Nixon signed a bill to increase the monthly rates for widows’ dependency and indemnity compensation. The new legislation changes the concept upon which dependency and {indemnity compensation had heretofore been based. The formula, wherein a set rate of compensation ($120) plus 12 percent of the basic pay of the deceased veterans’ rank was payable, has been eliminated.
The new law establishes a standard table of rates related to the rank or rating held by the veteran at the time of his death oi discharge, whichever is the later. The new rates will become effective on December 1, 1969: and will be reflected in the check received on or about January 2, 1970.
The minimum monthly rate payable under the new law is $167.
In addition, the law now provides for additional payments of $20 per month for each child below the age of 18, and $50 per month in the case of a widow so disabled as to require the aid and attendance of another person oi is in a nursing home.
