increases in concentration. Also, anything that upsets the calves’ digestive system or general thriftiness will make them more susceptable to the scour organism. And once, you have an outbreak in unsanitary crowded conditions, the scours organism will often increase in virulence as it passes through the calf crop. Now, I don’t pretend to know all the answers, but I do know that I can predict with a fair degree of accuracy a number of farms in Madison and Warren Counties that will have a calf scours problem this winter. These farms will have at least some of the following factors in common:
1. Cow herd is not broken down into separate feeding units. Cows that haven’t calved will be fed at the same high level as those that are nursing. New bom calves will just get too much milk.
2. Cows and calves are oonfined or fed in a bam lot that will turn into a mud hole with the first bad weather and cows will be bogged down in mud up to their udders.
3. These farmers will think mostly of treating the scours problem with one of the.
antibiotics rather than what is j causing the problem and how toi prevent it.
Here’s hoping your herd has a calf scours free winter.
