An educational drive on emphysema and air pollution was launched this week by the public information committee of the Tuberculosis and Health Association of Northern Virginia in the eight counties it serves.
A simple breathing test, films and literature are offered to any group or organization.
The latest film “Life and Breath” on emphysema is in color and fifteen minutes running time. It relates the complex development of emphysema and incorporates technique of detection, examination and treatment. Some of the highly intricate "shots” use the latest in photographic technology.
Emphysema, a growing problem and an increasing concern to the TB-RD movement, was second among diseases for which Social Security disability payments were made in a recent year. When primary and secondary causes of death are combined, emphysema and chronic bronchitis account for more than 70,000 deaths per year. More and more people are developing this breathrobbing disease. The lack of specific knowledge about specific causes and effective treatment makes the need for research, professional education and public enlightenment particularly acute.
