The Virginia "Highway Safety Division will assist the National Foundation For Highway Safety n staging the Fifth .Annual Highway Safety Sunday oromoted by the Foundation on February 22, John T. Hanna, Director of the Virginia Highway Safety Division, announced oday.
Religious leaders of all lenominations will be asked to nclude material which will be supplied them in their sermons ind bulletins that day. Mr. Hanna said hat 2,000 publications will be listributed to Virginia’s 136 local lighway safety commissions by he Division’s program soordinators, who will ask that hey be turned over to the shurches with an explanation of he program and request that hey be given the widest use >ossible.
Noting that traffic deaths rose sharply both nationally and in Virginia last year, Mr. Hanna said shat major emphasis will be placed on alcohol, which is nvolved in at least 50 per cent of ill fatal crashes; speed, which caused 800,000 deaths and njuries; young drivers, one third jf whom were involved in fatal crashes and weekend driving, which saw 40 per cent of all leaths and 30 per cent of all njuries.
Mr. Hanna felt that a great potential lay in more promotion of highway safety by religious leaders. “It is estimated that what we mistakenly call traffic accicents’ could be cut 90 pei cent if all of us observed the Golden Rule at all times.
