“They’re all gone now, The old familiar faces.’’ A few nights ago I received a message that an uncle had passed to his reward. He was the last of my father’s brothers. I remember him as a young man studying for the ministry, his enthusiasm and dedication. I remember him spending time with us and preparing his sermons. One of his favorite spots was an old oak tree behind our home (wonder If it is still there) where he would go to meditate. I remember his visit to us as part of his honeymoon, his Emily, how he loved her, did till the end. I went with him to a little church one night to which he had been invited to hold a service. He chose his text and settled down to talking in a moderately low tone and I settled down to listen, as is my custom. All at once he raised his voice and I almost jumped out of the pew. If I had had any devil in me that night he would have scared it out of me. Imagine every one listened from then on.
He carried the message to those in high places and to the lowly. He visited the sick and those who had been imprisoned. If he had a sin, it must have been gluttony; how that man could eat. I have followed him in that. I think he was the first to make me think of entering the ministry. Maybe the call was not strong enough, I didn’t make it. If I can hold out faithfully to the end maybe God will add another star to his crown. I hope it is already overloaded.
