Test Balls Gain
At Record Rate
The 177 bulls on the Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association gain test at the Culpeper and Dublin Central Test Stations are gaining at a record-breaking rate through the first 56 days of the official 140 day test.
At Culpeper, where 27 Polled Hereford, 7 Herefords, 4 Charolais, and 69 Angus are being tested, the average daily gain was 3.32 pounds and the weight-per-day-of-age was 2.62 pounds.
At Dublin, where 38 Angus, 19 Hereford, 6 Polled Hereford, and 7 Charolais are being tested, the [average daily gain was 3.18 and the weight-per-day-of-age was 2.61 pounds.
The bulls being tested for the 12th consecutive year at Culpeper and third year at Dublin stand to make the best records yet, said A. L. Eller Jr., Virginia Tech extension specialist, who serves as the Virginia BCIA advisor.
The average adjusted 205 day weight was 540 pounds, which is the highest of any group of bulls ever to start through the central testing program. All young bulls being tested come from the herds of Virginia BCIA members who are on complete herd performance testing. The bulls placed on test are selected from the top based on performance. The 140 day test period will be completed on Feb. 19 at Dublin and Feb. 20 at Culpeper. On the final day, all bulls will be weighed and graded and sonorayed to read backfat thickness between the 12th and 13th ribs. Complete performance pedigrees and individual performance data will be carried in the sale catalogs on all bulls which surpass the rigid minimums for the sales. The bull sales are scheduled for.Mai;cb ,13 at Culpeper and March 14 at Dublin. Visitors are invited to either station at anytime and should write A. L. Eller reports that bulls tested over the past 11 years at Culpeper and Dublin have been increasing in popularity with commercial and registered breeders each year. These bulls have generally given excellent accounts of themselves in the breeding pastures of their new owners.
