Distribution of $80 million for construction and maintenance on Virginia’s 42,300-mile secondary road system during the 1971-72 fiscal year was announced today by the State Department of Highways.
The State Highway Commission last month approved fhe total secondary roads budget, an increase of about $6 million over the current year’s apportionment. As in previous years, by far the largest part of the secondary budget-$74,062,237 -will come from state road user taxes. The balance of $5,937,763 will be derived from federal road user taxes, and will be provided to the state through the federal Highway Trust Fund.
Virginia’s state secondary highway system includes the local roads in 94 counties. The other two counties, Arlington and Henrico, maintain and improve their own secondary roads, and ^receive direct payments from the state for this purpose.
The state secondary system receives 33 per cent of net road funds, except federal interstate payments and revenue provided by the 1966 session of the General Assembly. The bulk of the funds is distributed among the counties by a method taking into account such
