Virginia Telephone & Telegraph Company is celebrating 40 years of service this month. The past forty years have been characterized by unprecendented industrial, residential and academic growth throughout its properties in Virginia. VT&T Co. began providing telephone service in Charlottesville and the surrounding area in 1931. From the original 4,304 company-owned telephones in service in 1931, the total telephones has grown to the present 111,385. Mr. D. H. Reid, Vice President and Division Manager of Virginia Telephone & Telegraph Company, reports that in keeping with this rapid growth, VT&T Co. had $58,632,164 of telephone plant in service at the end of 1970. As the employer of 1,010 Virginians, the Company’s 1970 payroll totaled $6,165,967.
The proposed 1971 construction budget of $12,798,100 is an all time high for VT&T Co. According to Mr. Reid, the Company’s desire to expand and improve its service capabilities at this accelerated pace stems from its confidence in the continued growth of the areas the Company now serves.
