Madam Editor:
Ever since Potomac Edison announced details of its power transmission line in the Rappahannock News (2-11-71), many folks have been asking a question that we couldn’t answer, “Why do they want to build the Northern 23 miles from Riverton to Rock Mills as single circuit on wooden poles and the remaining 7 miles from Rock Mills to Boston as a double circuit on 100 foot steel towers?”
Now we have the answer. Potomac Edison is not through with its plans to destroy our Rappahannock County environment with just the Riverton to Boston line. By 1975 it will build another 138 KV transmission line from the end of the steel towers just south of Rock Mills to an enlarged transformer station near the Farmer’s Co-op in Sperryville. A quick look at the Rappahannock map distributed bv the R.L.E.P. shows that this future route would cross the Five Forks intersection and run across the south slope of Turkey Mountain. Many more landowners are now vitally affected because unless the transmission line as presently proposed is stopped the Rock Mills - Sperryville line would be next in an endless series of steel towers and right-of-way slashes crisscrossing our entire county. Your land is quite possibly next. . .“on the line.” Now is the time for your voice to be heard. Now is the time to SAVE RAPPAHANNOCK.
