Substandard Tires
Illegally Sold
Governor Linwood Holton has been notified by the U. S. Department of Transportation that relatively inexpensive and inferior tires, designed for farm use only and not meeting federal standards for passenger car use, are being sold illegally for road use, John T. Hanna, Director of the Virginia Highway Safety Division, announced today Hanna said that such tires are required to be branded with the phrase “Unsafe for Highway use” and tagged with two labels indicating that under a federal regulation sale for passenger car use subjects the seller to a civil penalty up to $1,000 for each tire sold. In addition, manufacturers are required to report periodically to the Department of Transportation the number of such tires sold and the names of the dealers or distributors purchasing them. Removal of the labels before sale, hanna continued, also calls for a civil penalty up to $1,000. He said further that unscrupulous dealers are not only removing the tags but buffing off the brands and selling the tires to unsuspecting purchasers and that the public, in some cases, has contributed to this adverse situation by pur chasing these inferior tires, the labels and brands on which have
