Mrs. Hazel F. Crumpton, Manager of the Winchester Social Security Office, in a statement released today, emphasized the need and importance of people knowing their rights under the social security program. Mrs. Crumpton stated, “Many people still think of social security as a retirement insurance program only.” She stressed the need of people being more aware of the disability features of social security.
Thousands of dollars in benefits are being lost by workers who assume their illness or condition is not severe enough to qualify for disability benefits. Many of these disabled workers have listened to the advice of well-meaning relatives and friends and have not contacted their local social security office. She cautioned that the proper source of information on social security matters is your local office. Many people have been pleasantly surprised to find
| out they could qualify for benefits.
Mrs. Crumpton reviewed the basic requirements for disability benefits. An individual must be so severely disabled he cannot do substantial work and his disabling condition must be expected to last at least 12 months. In addition, the disabled individual must have 1 worked under social security in 1 five out of the ten years immediately preceding his • disability. Anyone disabled before age 31 needs only to have worked one-half the time between age 21 and the time he became disabled. r A worker disabled before age 24
