started badly when January saw 92 deaths to top the preceding January’s toll of 84. However, a good reduction was achieved in February when they dropped from 103 to 86 and another in March when they were down from 89 to 81. They started upward again and April ended with 93 to compare badly with the 86 of the preceding April. The upward trend has continued into May. With good weather here, Colonel Burgess said that heavier traffic volumes could be expected and that these can be reflected In the usual high-death summer weekends. The coming Memorial Day holiday, he noted, will be a three-day one. Mileage for the year, he said, is up 3.1 percent.
“Nationally, deaths are down,” Colonel Burgess observed, “and it will indeed be a tragedy for Virginia to lose the high standing she achieved when only nine of the 50 states ended 1970 with a lower mileage death rate than ours. A far greater tragedy lies in the increase in human lives unnecessarily lost on our streets and highways,” he concluded.
