David J. Poe, District Conservationist, examines a pond for algae which is a low type of plant life that forms a thick blanket on the bottom of a pond and interferes with fish feeding and production. Masses of the algae break loose and float to the surface of the pond forming a scum that makes fishing difficult. The Soil Conservation Service may recommend Israeli Carp to control the filamentous type algae, both on the pond bottom where it grows and the floating masses by eating it. Algae can also be controlled by the use of chemicals used in property prescribed amounts.
