According to Robinson, spiders can become so numerous in the house they can be a nuisance or a pest. In most cases, they are so few in number they go undetected. “If spiders are a nuisance, they and their egg sacs can be removed with a vaccum cleaner and a through cleanup of the premises,” advised Robinson.
Should the vaccum cleaner method of removing spider hordes fail, chemical control is suggested.
Stated Robinson, “Aerosol sprays of dichlorvos, or pyrethrins are effective in spider ‘krtfock-down’ treatments. Dichlorvos strips give good control for several months in rooms with little ventilation. Residual applications of chlordane or lindane will' give control at window sills and doorways where spiders might enter the house.
“Chemical treatments outdoors around the house are not recommended. Spiders are an important part of the natural population. To eliminate them could permit the multiplication of less desirable insects,” cautioned Robinson. Advised the entomologist, “Read the label on each pesticide container before each use. Follow instructions to the letter. Heed all cautions and warnings and note precautions concerning residues.”
