POTOMAC EDISON Company has formally withdrawn its application for a special use permit for a proposed 138,000 volt powerline that would have extended from Riverton to Boston.
In announcing withdrawal of the application, a Pepco news release said the action was possible because of “an agreement with Virginia Electric and Power Company eliminating the need for construction” of the 138 kv line — a proposal which stirred up a great deal of agitation in the county and which, among other things, spurred formation of the militant organization, the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection (RLEP).
The president of RLEP, Philip Irwin of Flint Hill, saw Potomac Edison’s abandonment of the Riverton to Boston proposal as “inevitable.” He added:
