S.E. Hening
Sidney E. Hening, a former resident of Sperryville, died March 13 at Sunny Shores Villas, St. Petersburg, Fla. at the age of 84.
Hening was for many years a YMCA secretary in China, Switzerland, Germany, New York, Atlanta and Pittsburgh where he was the General Secretary for ten years. Following his retirement from the YMCA, he was the Treasurer of the Home Mission Society of American (Northern) Baptists for seven years.
In 1939, Hening successfully negotiated the gift of the Belgian World’s Fair Exhibit building worth $700,000 to Virginia Union University in Richmond.
While in China, he wrote a book, “Life of Christ in Simple Language,” (English and Chinese) which was used as a text book in China and Japan. After retirement he served as a lay reader of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Virginia.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Robin Stewart of Baltimore; a son, J. Burwell Hening of Alexandria; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Burial is to be at Mount Comfort Cemetery, Alexandria. □
