YOU LIKE BIRD DOGS. Your husband likes bird dogs? You both hunt and are crazy about bird dogs?
Anyway, you’d enjoy going out on a pleasant hack, a smooth-gaited walking horse, and following a pair of crazed white pointers around the big country near Thoroughfare Gap which runs along the Bull Run Mountains, listening to the pleasant talk of the gallery that need not mean anything to you.
Suddenly, one of the dogs snaps to a point. . .If you haven’t been watching, just enjoying the ride and the country, suddenly you are a part of the cantering gallery rushing toward the pointing dog to see the handler dismount, flush a bird before the staunch dog, and send him on again.

There is friendliness here and the veneer of friendliness since all recognized trials amount to competition. For the trainers, the trials represent an uncertain livelihood; for tiie amateur handlers and owners the competitiveness may be politely disguised.
