Use a light potting soil as you would for your flowering house plants. Water at weekly intervals with a soluble house plant fertilizer which you can secure from your garden center or florist. This will promote vigorous growth and ensure a nice supply of fresh chives or parsley for winter use.
Chives grow to a height of about 10 inches with slender, graceful foliage. The delicate onion flavor of the chopped fresh leaves is especially good in salads, omelets or scrambled eggs. They are also used in soups, stews, sauces. scalloped vegetables and cottage cheese. Use only the fresh tender leaves as the bulbs or dried leaves lose their flavor.
Chive bulbs which are planted in early spring multiply rapidly. The clumps need to be divided every two or three years to prevent excessive crowding. This dividing operation can be done in the fall and some of the plants potted for the winter use as suggested here.
