Feeder calf sales up
DURING THE FIRST WEEK of the 1972 special feeder calf sales in Virginia, prices were up considerably over last fall, reports K. C. Williamson, professor of animal science and an Extension specialist at Virginia Tech.
Steer calves were averaging $9.50 per hundredweight higher than the same sales last year. Heifer calves were up $7.70 per hundred over 1971 prices. Steer calves were averaging around $48 per hundredweight while heifers were selling for $7.75 per hundred less, averaging around $40.25 per hundred.
The rather large spread between steer and heifer prices suggests that few heifers are being purchased for herd building. This is contrary to early opinions that Heifers would sell well because of the relatively good prices received for calves this year.
Weight of calves also is up this fall. Steer calves are averaging slightly over 500 pounds per head and heifer calves are averaging about 465 pounds each. Calves are averaging about 20 pounds per head heavier than those sold during the first week of sales last fall. □
