Mast identified the problem for Virginia livestock growers. Eighty-two per cent of Virginia’s herds are less than 50 head in size, but account for 46 per cent of all cattle produced. Twelve per cent are from 50-100 head, or 26 per cent of production; four per cent are from 100 to 200 head, or 17 per cent of production; less than one per cect are over 200 head, and these herds only account for 10 per cent of total production.
