production will come from increasing individual animal performance. But the greatest increase will come from running more beef cows on our pastures and native grazing lands. At present and forecast feed prices, it will be too expensive to produce them on grains and concentrates which are now in greater demand for worldwide human consumption.
“WE ARE going to meet the challenge of helping Virginia’s farmers keep the supply of grass ahead of the increase in livestock number,” Grimwood said. “We must grow more grass on fewer acres than ever before and we must do it quickly before our pasture lands begin to deteriorate from misuse,” he said.
“Reports from our field offices indicate many Virginia farmers have increased their cows by 50 to 100% by switching to a planned year round grazing system. Most farmers fall fertilize tall fescue for ■winter grazing and fertilize other grasses as needed to provide year round grazing for their cattle. They all report reducing the cost of keeping a cow for a year by at least $40 as well as the amount of equipment and labor it takes to do it.
