CUT EARLY TO IMPROVE HAY—On most Rappahannock farms the protein in our predominately fescue and orchard grass hays could be improved if the hays were cut 10-15 days earlier. Many farmers who delay cutting until orchard grass is well past full bloom will disagree with me; but I don’t know of a single cow who calves before mid-April who will. This spring if we have good hay making weather and cut early, grass hay can run up to 16% and average out at 10% or higher in protein content. With hay of this quality, the brood cow can raise a healthy calf and rebreed on schedule without additional purchased protein supplement.
FEEDER PIG SALE—Area swine producers have organized a state graded, “tel-o-auction” feeder pig sale at the Madison Livestock Market. These sales are planned on a monthly basis and the third sale will be Tuesday, May 28. For further information contact your Extension Office.
PRUNE EARLY FLOWERING SHRUBS—Spring, after early flowering shrubs such as forsythia, mock orange, bridal wreath and spiera have finished blooming, is the time to prune. Prune out the old canes and shape to your individual taste.□
