A few farmers following Experiment Station recommendations and farmer experience, use two acres per cow. They fertilize their grasses twice a year and use round-bale or other low-labor hay making systems. They are increasing their numbers by 50% without increasing labor and cost per cow. This is a significant increase in production and an example of many things that can be dohe. to increase grass and beef production.”
THERE IS opportunity for putting idle land back into grass and using existing grassland more intensively. Also grasslands can be used in combination with cropland, especially in the Coastal Plain. The proper combination of cool and warm season grasses can lengthen the grazing season, Grimwood said.
Conservationists in Virginia’s SCS field offices can provide technical help to farmers in planning and installing these year round grazing systems for increased beef and grass production.
“Planned year - round grazing systems will help stockmen produce more and protect more in 1974,” Grimwood said.D
