TAKE THE little matter of water to drink, for example. No problem. The engineers who hang out at the U.S. Geological Survey say there is enough water in “underground rock formations” situated only 30 miles from Washington to solve that mighty city’s water demands. Why, they assure us, some 100 million gallons of water could be pumped out of aquifers in an area of Maryland not far from the Chesapeake Bay, enough to see Washington through any crisis. Isn’t that nice? Washington and surrounding “developed” areas are already threatening to pump the Potomac dry during every summer, but that’s all right—we’ll just sink some super wells around Maryland (and, maybe later, around Virginia) and take care of everything. v How long is the madness of
