New Radar
POLICE ire now using radar devices operated from moving patrol cars which detect the speeds of oncoming cars, Colonel H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of the Virginia State Police Department, reported Wednesday.
These devices, he explained, are easily mounted in a car, totally electronic, absolutely accurate and give an audible signal, in addition to the speed reading, when a vehicle driven in violation contacts their beams.
“The moving radar has two advantages over conventional radar,” Burgess said. ‘ ‘ Permits troopers to perform other patrol duties without the necessity of watching the devices, andit does away with the necessity of turning around and pursuing an oncoming speeder who will have time to slow before a speedometer check is made. Courts will not ordinarily accept speed evidence when it is checked by visual estimation only,” he said.
The new radar devices may also be used stationarily, as are conventional radars, to detect speeds of cars moving in either direction.□
