In die case of the woodwinds, familiar excerpts from well-known children’s favorites are often used, such as “Peter and the Wolf,” “Greensleeves,” and familiar American folk tunes. The strings are presented in a similar fashion with particular emphasis on the wide range present in the string section, hence the richness and completeness of this section.
Both sections will be heard separately, the strings in compositions for string orchestra, and the woodwinds in works for woodwind quintet, thus establishing the above individuals as parts of a homogeneous group, and finally, both woodwinds and strings will be heard in concerted compositions in which the varieties of tone colors and individual characteristics are combined to produce the wide gamut of sounds comprising an orchestra.
