the powerline threat for the past three years with a mixture of indignation and a sense of futility in battling “the giants,” I can only speculate that the “putsch” is in effect a land grab, taking advantage of the pro-utility condemnation laws to seize vast strips of land that can only increase in value, and which can be used forever more by the utility to sublease to gas companies for transcontinental gas lines, dig for minerals or put to any other profit-seeking use: this in addition, of course, to possible potential use for a powerline if the need ever really develops, perhaps in ten or twenty years — by which time surely underground lines would be technically feasible.
Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty, it has truly been said. We must keep our beautiful land free of this unsightly, hazardous and totally unnecessary new powerline. We must keep fighting it with vigor and persistence. Waste or extravagance or inefficiency in Vepco’s operations, if they do exist, should be exposed and corrected—including the substantial funds expended for wining and dining many newspaper owners and editors to try to get a “good press” (strangely, money spent for such so-called “public relations” is not filed with the SCC as a separate item but is included with other expenses, making the sum difficult or imDossible to identify).
