BEEF SITUATION—I don’t know what it costs to produce a feeder calf anymore, but several farm publications are quoting a production cost of around 55(5 per pound for a 400 pound calf. If this is true, based on last week’s market prices, farmers are losing in the neighborhood of $100 for every calf they sell^-J
There is a story going around, for all I know its true, that brings home just how rugged the present price situation is: “There are two brothers in the cattle business down in Texas. One specializes in stealing cattle and the other one is stealing the feed. And they are still losing money.”
This may be the year to build a young cow herd. A time to keep \hack replacement heifers; and a time to sell off old cows and trade dollars to buy back young stock. This could put you in a very favorable situation when cattle prices go up again.
