SENATOR George S. Aldhizer, II (D-26th Dist.), chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce and Labor, held a hearing into the problems of tjie Virginia Employment Commission in connection with the growing rate of unemployment within the State on January 17. Senator Aldhizer, in remarks before the Committee, called on the Commission to “undertake whatever measures are prudent and necessary to -end delays in processing claims for unemployment benefits.” The Committee Chairman noted that the week of January 11 was a record week in the number of unemployment claims processed. “Statewide, the Comjnission processed 16,972 initial applications for benefits and processed some 47,830 on-going benefits claims. This is a fourfold increase over the number of claims processed this time last year,” he said.
