THE tentative 1974 traffic death toll for Virginia stands at 1,046, or 174 less than the 1,220 of 1973, reports Colonel H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police.
Colonel Burgess noted that if late reports and deaths of persons now carried as injured do not raise the 1974 figure above the 1,050 of 1964 it will be Virginia’s lowest traffic death toll since the 989 of 1963. However, he noted that this is unlikely and that 1974 will probably be the best year since 1965, which saw 1,062 deaths.
Deaths of pedestrians were down from 197 to 194 and of bicyclists from 22 to 15. Deaths of motorcyclists were up from 59 to 60 and of servicemen from 43 to 49.
Considerable monthly reductions were obtained in February (90-51), May (122-67) and September (128-82) but July set an all time record of 124. The mileage death rate, or deaths per each 100
