Except for broader coverage, SUA will be governed by the same rules as Virginia’s unemployment insurance program. To be eligible, workers must be out of work through no fault of their own and be actively looking for a job. Workers who quit their last job voluntarily wouldn’t be eligible in most cases. A worker who is too sick to work or is involved in a labor dispute cannot qualify either.
BENEFITS will range from $20 to $87 a week depending on previous earnings for up to 26 weeks. Heartwell urged all Virginia workers who think they may be eligible to apply for SUA, especially any persons who have applied for unemployment insurance in the past three months and been disqualified for insufficient earnings.
Benefits will be payable retroactively to cover unemployment dating back to December 22, 1974, for claims made January 12 through January 17, 1975.
Persons who think they may qualify should take their Social Security card and a list of the names and addresses of their employers and their periods of employment during the past year to the VEC office most convenient to them. If a person has a record of his earnings he should also bring this proof with him as it will expedite payments, Heartwell said.
Even small VEC offices which don’t normally take claims for unemployment insurance will take SUA claims,” Heartwell said. Offices in this category include South Hill, Williamsburg, Manassas, W’ytheville and other locations where the VEC offers services only certain days a week.L^
