State Police have been vigorously enforcing, is perhaps the major factor. So why try to belittle it? Because so much money has been invested in high-speed superhighways, must state officials now try to head off any tendency toward reducing the speeds of vehicles using these broad, over-engineered ribbons of concrete and asphalt? Does the “oil lobby” want us to drive faster, so we can use up its products faster? Is Colonel Burgess afraid that the size of his bureau will decrease as traffic statistics decrease, too?

PROBABLY none of these questions deserves a “yes,” but eagerness to downgrade the lower speed limit as a safety asset is peculiar. Let’s give it all the credit it deserves, and see to it that any effort to do away with it is resisted strongly.□
