Weil appeared at the regular planners’ meeting last Wednesday, July 16, to request a special meeting. As he said it, “We’re under contract to purchase this property and that contract is contingent on us getting a permit which would allow us to put in the facilities we want. But if we don’t get this thing resolved by the end of the month we’ll be pretty much out of it anyway,” Weil said. The cause for such hurry is “this is going to be a private type area. And we have people who will do our selling or marketing of the area for us. They’re saying they can’t be ready in time for next year” if Weil and his partners can’t get to work on the project soon, he said.
Owners of the Rappahannock Ski Area have already applied for a use permit so that Weil and his partners could find out if they would receive permission to develop the property as they want, But after that first hearing, the zoning appeals board advised them to resubmit the application under different sections of the zoning ordinance. If the permit were granted under the other articles of the ordinance, specifically Article 12B, the county would have more control over how the area was developed.
