Kilpatrick was contemptuous of Hess’s espousal of wood-burning stoves, especially as a solution for cities. He attacked the idea of neighborhood participatory democracy in an age of huge-ness, and he reminded everyone that “reality means jobs and a highly industrialized society is the way to provide jobs.”
Freedom is not a “little community sort of thing,” said Kilpatrick, but something which demands national policies, or at a minimum, watershed policies. Hess’s proposals, carried to their logical ends, would mean a return to “some primitive life,” concluded Kilpatrick, to which he replied: “Nonsense! Absolute nonsense! That would mean going back to the hardships, and the stinks.. .of Fifth Century life!”
