Take comments made by Mrs. Elizabeth Malta, for example, at the meeting held in Warrenton last Wednesday night (August 13) under the sponsorship of the Virginia Farm Bureau. Mrs. Malta is a member of the Board of Supervisors of Warren County, a schizophrenic jurisdic, tion if there ever was one with its dual effort to attract more and more industry while exploiting at the same time its breathtakingly beautiful mountain scenery; it doesn’t seem to have occured to the booster types up around Front Royal that too often you can’t enjoy the mountainous vistas for the industrial smog and stink.
MRS. MALTA declared right off how she was not in sympathy with mindless developer types. “I’d like to see everything in Warren County agriculture, with no development,” she declared, taking the opportunity to chastise farmers as one of the worst enemies of efforts along those lines. “I’ve gotten depressed about how farmers oppose any land use planning proposals that come up,” she said. “They want to farm, but they want the right to rezone and sell-out, too.” This attitude of regarding farms as retirement funds is helping
