Elizabeth Malta elaborated on her theme: “It’s shortsighted of people who sell out for development. They don’t look far enough ahead.. .In Warren County, 92% of our budget is for education, welfare and public health, all caused by development, and people should realize that every 1,000 acres sold for oneacre lots just multiplies the burden on the county and the burden on the other taxpayers in the county.”
So convinced was Mrs. Malta of this view that she went even further than some of her listeners were prepared to go: “I, personally, don’t think people have a right to say ‘I have a right to do what I want to with my property’ .. .not when it creates a burden for everyone else.. .Virginia has to wake up to the realization that land use planning in the long run is going to protect us all. We’ve got to get away from, what do they call it, the leap frog development that takes advantage of a situation where a farm down the road doesn’t want to be in an agricultural district, and development sprawls all over the county.”
