IT’S September and local political momentum is starting to build up. By the time voting day arrives in November, candidates and voters alike will be glad it’s over.
The opening rhetorical flourishes haven’t been all that bad. In some instances, as a matter of fact, some actual issues have been faced directly! If we’re lucky, this good beginning will be built upon by all the candidates as the weeks ahead unfold.
But one distressing aspect of past elections has also become apparent in some of the counties within our purview: Public apathy. Of what good is it for a civic organization to get candidates together and arrange, as well as they can, a meaningful dia, logue on the issues, when nobody shows up to hear? Atone early meeting one of our reporters attended, there were almost as many relatives and campaign workers in the audience as members of the general public.
