The band was originally made up of Bill Robertson and the late Morrison Green , both of Warren - ton, and the Ashby cousins, and won an invitation to play in the National Folk Festival at Constitution Hall. They were asked back every year until the termination of the festival in 1943, and they played over Connie B. Gay’s radio show, “Gay Time,” over WARL in Washington, D. C. for two years.
During its long career the band has gained some new players. Richard Ashby, John’s cousin and neighbor who plays the guitar, Ronnie Poe of Amissville who plays the banjo, Ashby Kylh of Catlett, who also plays the guitar, and Jack Frazier of Amissville, who plays the bass, formed the group which joined John Ashby in recording two albums. The first was made in 1970 and is called “John Ashby and The Free State Ramblers, Old Virginia Fiddling. ’ ’ The second was recorded in 1973 and is called “Down On Ashby’s Farm, Fine Old Fiddle Tunes.” Both albums were made by County Records and are still selling well.
