THE SOUND of the old fiddle vibrated through the summer night air with a timeless ability to enliven the spirit. Feet kept time on the wooden floorboards of the big front porch and children raced wildly through the old frame farmhouse and out again into the misty night air. Some listened, some chatted, but the hard core group of musicians who stood in a circle on the front stoop played with abandon, played with skill, and played deep into the morning.
The scene could easily have been lifted from another century, but in fact it took place several weeks ago and occurs whenever John Ashby calls his family and friends together for a rollicking evening of musical merry-making at the Ashby “homeplace” near Orlean, in Fauquier County.
