HOME canners are being advised not to experiment with canning lid substitutes. Mrs. Nancy Harvey Steorts, Special Assistant to the Secretary of Agriculture for Consumer Affairs, reports that because of the difficulty in obtaining home canning replacement lids, many consumers are now trying questionable methods of reusing old lids. Some of the products being used are sealants, rubber cement, glue, bathroom caulking and cellophane.
