IN AN effort to familiarize business and government officials from Orange, Fauquier, Culpeper, Madison and Rappahannock counties with the history and landmarks of those counties, the Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning District Commission sponsored a bus tour of the Planning District. According to the Commission’s executive director, Arthur Warren, the tour was intended to “get the officials thinking” about the history of the area and possibly give them some idea as to how historical landmarks in the area can be preserved.
The trip, which began early in
the Baptist Church parking lot in Culpeper on Wednesday, October 15, proceeded through the town of Culpeper. The first speaker on the tour, Claude Guinn, a history Professor at Germanna College, gave a brief history of the town and county of Culpeper, and a detailed account of the Cedar Mountain Battle in which Southern General S tonewall” Jackson attempted to retake the town of Culpeper on August 9, 1862. Historians, he said, are split as to who won the battle. Although Jackson forced Union troops to retreat, Jackson was unable to capture Culpeper, he said.
