OVER THE YEARS it has been my observation that the majority of the most successful farmers in the counties I have worked in took advantage of the farm tours, field days and other educational events to improve their production and management skills. Another characteristic common to these men was a positive open attitude. Their objective being to glean and sift out new ideas that applied to their particular farm operation and put them to work.
During the fall and winter months there will be several such opportunities available to you. For more detailed information on any of these events call your V.P.I. Extension Office.
Tuesday, October 28—Field Day at Northern Virginia Research Station, Middleburg, beginning at 1:30 p.m. This will be a walking tour with emphasis on evaluating the various forage systems for wintering beef cows. You will observe stockpiled fescue which has been accumulating for winter grazing, the condition of pastures grazed at different rates, the unweaned calves born last spring and many other aspects of the 11 different forage systems being compared will be seen and discussed.
Monday, November 3—One Day Area Swine School at Graves Mountain Lodge. Will feature V.P.I. Swine Specialist and successful area swine producers. Will be geared to the small producer 1-20 sows.
Thursday, November 6—Shenandoah Valley Research Station Field Day, Steels Tavern 1 to 3:30 p.m. Included in the program will be reports obtained at the station, comparing stockpiled fescue, standing sorghum, and convential feeding of harvested hay for wintering beef cows. Practical methods of seeding, overseeding, managing and using fescue in beef production. And first year results of Sheep Production, Research Comparing Different Lambing Dates and Management Systems.
Events coming up in December will include: “Area Farm Leasing and Renting;” “Private Pesticide Applicator Certification Training;” “Federal and State Income Tax Conference”; “Orchard Pruning Demonstration”.
