Flint Hill vineyard
to celebrate vintage
THE FIRST VINTAGE from Farfelu Vineyard near Flint Hill will be celebrated on Saturday, October 25, from 5-7 p.m. with a wine and cheese party, hosted by vineyard owners C. J. and Lou Raney.
The Raneys were one of the first Piedmont citizens to believe in the potential for a wine industry in northern Virginia. Raney has set out more than 3,000 vines of French-American hybrids. The Raney’s vineyard is the largest in Rappahannock County.
Since Raney planted his grape vines, a Virginia Winegrowers Association has been established. They can rightfully boast of a membership of several hundred, a journal published twice a year and a record turn out of more than 200 people at the second annual meeting held near, Middleburg in August. With winegrowers like Charles Raney taking the initiative, some people believe the northern Virginia Piedmont could well become the “Burgundy of America.”
