We would like to second the Thackere^s’ nomination (in a letter to the editor two weeks ago) for meanest thieves of the year. These thieves also stripped our property of azaleas and rhododendrons in September. Incidentally, in our case, they showed an amazing audacity: They didn’t take all our plants the first time but returned to the scene of the crime-at least once to get more plants!
Our property has been burglarized many times in the last few years but until now the thefts have always involved things that could be quickly replaced, like garden hose and tools (a complete set has been taken on several different occasions). However, this most recent theft involves more—we’ve had to abandon a long-range dream.
Since 1964, when we bought our land on the Hazel River, we’ve been gradually landscaping it with the hope that by the time we were able to settle permanently in Rappahannock County we would have a woodland garden with banks of mature azaleas and rhododendrons. Now we know that hope cannot be realized.
