A newspaper report that on Febraury 10 your County School Board Chairman, Mr. E. N. Montague, declared himself unconvinced of the “usefulness” of kindergartens was a little like hearing that he didn’t think electricity was useful. Both shed light in the darkness—one inside the child, the other outside in the places where he, and we, all live. Both kindergartens and electricity are advantages we can, conceivable, live without. But must we turn the clock back and return to ignorance and _ superstition as well as candle light? Does Mr. Montague and his cautious rural friends suggest we live with inadequacy in order to save the 14 percent rise in taxes which winter kindergarten for Rappahannock may mean?
