‘Siren taps'
illegal in Va.
Taped siren sounds, reproducing the siren sounds of emergency vehicles, are illegal in Virginia when used on other than specified vehicles, warns, Colonel H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police. These tapes, now being offered for sale in Virginia, are designed to be used on players installed on motor vehicles or portable ones carried in them. They reproduce the sound of sirens such as those on police cars, ambulances and fire equipment.
Colonel Burgess said that Section 46.1-284 of the Code of Virginia prohibits .the use of any type of warning device on the highway which has not been approved by the Superintendent of State Police. He further stated that any vehicle must be rejected by an inspection station if equipped with a siren, unless it is specified an emergency vehicle by law.
Any one using such a device illegally can be guilty of a misdemeanor and be subject to a fine of not less than $10 nor more than $100 or by imprisonment of not less than one nor more than 10 days, or by both fine and imprisonment, Colonel Burgess observed.
