It’s useless to judge a child’s work by adult standards. The aim of a child’s work is not external but internal. The brilliant work of Dr. Maria Montessori points out the sensitive times of a child’s development. Most adults are only too painfully aware of the areas of themselves haven’t be fulfilled in their physical, mental and social * make-up. If only the right means “ had been forthcoming in the environment at the right time we feel that we might not have grown up so awkward, so bad at games, so unappreciative of music and art, so lacking in color sense, so bad at figures, so atrocious in our accent, so illegible in our handwriting, so* shy in company, so dependent on others, so vacillating in our decisions, etc.
It is useless to catch ahold of a critical period after it has passed and all these things are learned at certain times or else never. To take an example, it is useless to expect a child of 6 or 7 to be enthusiastic about learning the alphabet because by that time his special interest in shapes would have vanished.
Without kindergarten some children will be on a road to failure for the rest of their lives. It’s only too painfully true that, as Wordsworth says, “The child is father of the man’’.
